Private aviation is not just about luxury—it's a vital part of the economy, fostering connectivity and providing high-skilled jobs for millions. It allows businesses to break down geographic barriers and seize new opportunities. However, with this privilege comes the responsibility to embrace environmental stewardship. The future of aviation depends on our commitment to sustainable practices.

Embracing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Although business aviation accounts for only 0.04% of human-caused CO₂ emissions (according to ICAO's 2019 Environmental Report), we recognize that every sector must contribute to tackling climate change. The aviation industry has already set internationally agreed-upon carbon reduction standards, but we’re pushing for even more ambitious goals.

Since 2009, the business aviation community has implemented a strategic approach to reducing emissions, with one solution emerging as a game-changer: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is a scalable solution that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transforming the environmental impact of flight.

At MPI Jet, we are committed to more than just efficiency—we are actively exploring climate-smart practices that will shape the future of flight. As the demand for greener solutions grows, SAF is proving to be a game-changer for both commercial and private aviation.

What Is SAF and Why Does It Matter?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a renewable alternative to conventional jet fuel, made from feedstocks such as used cooking oil, agricultural residues, and organic biomass. SAF offers a significant environmental advantage, reducing carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel.

With the European Union targeting a 55% net greenhouse gas reduction by 2030 and California advancing emissions reporting regulations, the future of aviation is undoubtedly sustainable. SAF is at the forefront, providing a viable, scalable solution to reduce the aviation sector’s carbon footprint.

Is SAF Safe?

SAF undergoes extensive testing to meet the rigorous requirements of ASTM D7566, ensuring it meets safety standards before being approved for use. Civil aviation authorities and stakeholders, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), have worked to create a thorough approval process for SAF. Leading aviation regulators such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have endorsed SAF use, recognizing its safety and effectiveness when blended to meet ASTM D1655 standards in turbine aircraft.

Access to SAF: Easier Than You Think

Though widespread adoption is still progressing, SAF is becoming increasingly available. Thanks to our affiliation with Monterey Jet Center, MPI Jet can schedule SAF deliveries at Monterey Peninsula Airport (KMRY), making sustainability in private aviation a reality. In areas where physical SAF is not yet available, clients can take advantage of book-and-claim models, purchasing SAF credits for use at airports where SAF is offered.

The Cost of SAF vs. Traditional Jet Fuel

Currently, SAF accounts for only about 1% of global jet fuel production, which contributes to its higher cost. However, as production ramps up and supply meets demand, we expect prices to stabilize. Legislative support and advancements in refining technologies will further drive down costs and improve accessibility to SAF in the coming years.

Will All Jet Fuel Eventually Be Sustainable?

SAF has been in development for over two decades, but the last five years have seen explosive growth in demand. Private aviation clients are embracing sustainability initiatives, recognizing that fuel alternatives like SAF are not only good for the planet but essential for the industry's long-term viability.

The transition to SAF will not happen overnight, but the momentum is building. With continued legislative action, industry commitment, and advancements in fuel technology, the shift toward SAF will accelerate.

Sustainability at MPI Jet: A Commitment to the Future

At MPI Jet, we believe in leading by example. We support initiatives like SAF and make it possible for our clients to further reduce their carbon emissions and promote sustainability in private aviation. Every step we take toward a greener future matters, and we’re proud to be part of the movement shaping the next generation of flight.
